I think I was forced to like sweet and sour pork but my best friend (she’s gonna kill me when she sees this) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So when we were in high school I’d go for a sleepover at her house on Friday after school and we’d ALWAYS go get dinner from this Chinese shop called Chasing Dragon. She always ordered the same thing, sweet and sour chicken with noodles and I always had the hoi sin ribs with Singapore noodles. Somehow though, I always tasted hers just for the heck of it.
Years later, I came to actually really like sweet and sour anything. Here I am now making the stuff at home and it SLAPS guys! Do it and you won’t regret it. I also realised east Asian food is surprisingly simple to make too
1 kg pork cubes
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 egg white
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 medium green, yellow and red bell pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 medium onion, cut into 1 inch pieces
Salt to taste
For the sauce
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, undrained
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Put the pork in a bowl, and season with a teaspoon of salt, a pinch of sugar, and 1 teaspoon soy sauce. Mix in the egg white, cover, and put in the fridge for about an hour.
In a bowl, mix in the corn flour and water to make a light batter. Use the back of the spoon test to check if the batter is the right consistency.
Heat the oil in a heavy saucepan until it begins to smoke. You could also use a deep fryer if you have one.
Put the pork into the batter and then add the pork one by one from the batter into the pan and cook until all sides are golden brown. Once cooked put them on a paper towel so that the excess oil drains off.
Next, in a wok, heat up the sesame oil on a medium heat until it just begins to smoke. Add your mixed peppers and onions and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes until just slightly tender. Take the vegetables off the heat and set aside.
In a large saucepan, mix the cup water, salt, sugar, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, lemon juice and soy sauce.
Bring to a simmer and stir in the cooked pork, vegetables and pineapple chunks with juice. Turn up the heat, and mix in 2 tablespoons cornstarch and 1/4 cup water to thicken.
Cook until well blended and serve with your choice of sides......BUT may I recommend fried rice or ramen noodles :-)
