We love our wooden cooking spoons. I mean, walk into any Kenyan household and you’re sure to find a drawer dedicated to wooden spoons.
The thing about these wooden spoons is that over time without proper TLC, they tend to lose their luster and sometimes become smelly.
Fear not, here’s a few tips that will keep them spruced up
1. You can boil your wooden spoons and then let them dry out in the sun. This kills off any bacteria, gets rid of built up residue and restores the colour of the spoons. Do this every 6 months or so
Every other week, wash the spoons with baking soda, a bit of freshly squeezed lemon juice and warm water. This eliminates odours.
You can polish your spoons with some linseed oil or walnut oil. Avoid olive oil or vegetable oil as these will go rancid over time.
These are tips on maintaining the spoons but if they are super old and none of these methods work, feel free to use them as kindle or firewood
